Rare Baseball Cards
Hunting back into baseball history appeals to many collectors and one of the most interesting of these histories is that of the rare baseball card. Rare baseball cards have been collected since the 1870’s and are a baseball phenomenon in their own right. Baseball cards were created by a sporting goods company: Peck and Snyder, who printed up baseball cards to be used as advertisements for their products. On the one side was pictured a famous team, on the other was the advertisement. These were called trade cards.

Collecting trade cards (which not only depicted baseball themes, but everything from presidents to animals) became an extremely popular hobby during the late 1800’s and so, interestingly, today many of the cards remaining have damage on the back where they were once stuck into a scrap book.

The Library of Congress has put its collection of rare baseball cards online, giving you Internet access to 2,100 cards dating from 1887 to 1914.

Card collector Benjamin K. Edwards preserved these baseball cards and later gave them to poet Carl Sandburg, who in turn donated them to the library.
